not sure, but a website/forum needs $$ to carry on, thus the recruiting. Imo, less than 5% of this archive site is GD oriented (wild guess) plus this site has a vast wealth of available GDshows to DL & Stream. Any site that opens people up to the GD and has the resources to "maintain" is a good thing. Good luck to you lost sailors (and deadhook)!

At no time will money ever be taken for the site (I am not a politician, so you can believe this). The site is a "free forum", which basically means there are ads from the forum provider (which firefox add block plus can conveniently block). That is how they make their money. We (the lost sailor pub) make NO money, ever. The lost sailor pub has no need for revenue, nor will we accept revenue.
At one point there was talk of getting a server, but I crossed that option out, because that costs money, and we should not be paying anyone for access to the music Jerry wanted to be free.

there are ads from the forum provider.... That is how they make their money. http://userpages.umbc.edu/~hamilton/gdnotice.txt No commercial gain may be sought by websites offering digital files of our music, whether through advertising, exploiting databases compiled from their traffic, or any other means. There is no getting around the fact that you are using a commercial-gain site, whether fans make the money or someone else does. Ad-supported sites have been asked by the Dead to stop having GD content on their sites in the past. Of course the Dead biz machinery has changed over the last couple years, but I personally doubt it's gotten *more* tolerant. :/

That is a direct quotation, sounds like the archive is involved in the filthy lucre business too.

I do see a difference between tax-deductible donations and advertising revenue.

Comparing an internet site offering music and two charitable institutions attached to a higher calling is difficult for me, but to say that advertising supports the LSP is really reaching to a pretty obscure place too, especially when everybody just blocks the ads with blockers anyway, and most of the ads are in Italian.

ads are ads though - and are intended to make a profit for somebody (not necessarily the site itself)

it is just the way the GD, errrr, R(W)hino sees it

(hey, if this is a non-profit, do we get to see the salaries of the employees/owners/principles?? that would be interesting to say the least)

St V - You are so wrong. LMA is charitable. Many folks donating time, equipment, knowledge, and all the archived material for free public consumption, now and in the future. There are no sponsored links here. Thousands of bands and artists are convinced that this site is non-profit. That fact is vital to any band's or artist's decision to allow their work to be archived here. Sites like yours and mine have sponsored links, for which we make a referral commission. That's how those ads work. AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH! Why do I bother? BTW - I'd love it if you would all visit my site daily. More traffic means higher-valued ad space. DOH!

So I guess Jer would have been cool with you publishing the instructions with links to downloading soundboard files at LMA?

What about Weir, Lesh, Hart and Kreutzmann, they down with it as well?

Here are a few of Mickey Hart's thoughts on the topic. I thought his comment that "when we're jamming, the content is the audience's too" was quite illuminating. I don't think anyone could have anticipated the digital genie that would one day emerge from the taping lamp, and I think Mickey might wish he had a little more control these days.

It's from a 2005 interview in Southbound Magazine.

BM: Did the Dead's allowing tapers pave the road for free downloads?

MH: Here's how it went. We weren't great visionaries allowing people to record our concerts. It's what happened. The fans wanted it, and they kept coming to shows with equipment. The guard would take it away and give them a pink stub so they could claim their equipment on the way out. They came to us and said, 'We need more guards.' We had two choices, let them in or become cops. Now, we didn't want to police the situation, to turn into recording cops. So we just said, 'Let them in. When we're done with it, they can have it.' We didn't have any great business vision. We didn't know it would increase our audience by millions. They started with cassettes. We realized, 'Hey man, the audience is taping, but the real thing is in the board tape, and they'll buy it.' It's about a thirst for music. If it's something rare, like moment music or jam music, people will really want it because it's unique. They have an equity in it because they're there making the music with us. When we play compositions, they're ours, but when we're jamming, the content is the audience's too. They are owners of it in a way, time sharers. It increases the thirst and the hunger. We went to mega-Dead. We couldn't even play stadiums. At one time, we thought about folding the tent. People were being killed, being thrown off balconies, fighting with police. We were like, 'That's not what the Dead is about. This is getting out of hand.' But with digital downloads, it eases that pressure. Everybody is having to be there to share in it; maybe not in that moment, but eventually they'll share it. There's a lot to be said about that. But you have to understand that the musician has to support himself in order to go on writing new material.
